Its transmission speed is from 10Mbit/s (low speed Ethernet) to 100Mbit/s (high speed Ethernet). IEEE passed IEEE802.3z's Gigabits Ethernet (GbE) standard in 1998. And 10Gigabit Ethernet standard IEEE802.3ae also passed.
IEEE802.3ae standard defines optical fiber as the transmission medium of 10GbE network, including single-mode fiber and multi-mode optical fiber. The standard defines, at the wavelength of 850nm, the transmission distance of multimode fiber is from 28 meters of the ordinary 62.5/125um gradient multimode fiber to 300 meters of the laser optimized multimode fiber. In order to reach the transmission distance of 300 meters, the ordinary multimode fiber is powerless so it is necessary to optimize the production technology of optical fiber and control the process of optical fiber accurately, in order to develop a new laser optimized multimode optical fiber.
