Why multimode fiber can support 2000 meters at 100Mbps, but only 550 meters at 1Gbps? The main reason is the DMD phenomenon of multimode fiber. After testing, we found that the when multimode fiber transmits optical pulse, optical pulse will be divergence and broadening, when the divergence become a certain extent, the before and after pulse will be superimposed with each other, so that the receiver can not accurately distinguish each optical pulse signal, we call this phenomenon DMD (Differential Mode Delay). The main reasons are as follows: 1. the refractive index distribution of the fiber core is not perfect. When the multimode fiber is expected to be used in the LED light source network, the pulse energy is mainly distributed in the intermediate mode group under the full injection condition, and the influence on the higher order mode group and the lower order mode group is not obvious. But in the DMD test, the influence of these higher-order modes and the low order mode group will lead to the deformation and splitting of the optical pulse at different incident positions. 2, the center depression of optical fiber is the phenomenon that the refractive index of fiber core decreases obviously. This depression is related to the manufacturing process of optical fibers. This kind of center depression will greatly affect the transmission characteristics of optical fiber and weaken the performance of optical fiber.
Therefore, accurate control of the refractive index distribution of fiber and to eliminate central depression is the main task of 10G Ethernet multimode fiber (super fiber). Using PCVD method to produce optical fiber perform is a good solution. PCVD is the preferred method of making a multimode optical fiber, it is with multiple deposition layers and precise profile control, the thousands of deposition layers process can control the adulteration effectively and obtain refractive index profile consistent with the theory requirements.
