Introduction
A metal heat treatment process in which metal is slowly heated to a certain temperature, maintained for a sufficient time, and then cooled at an appropriate rate (usually slow cooling, sometimes controlled cooling). The purpose is to soften the materials or workpieces processed by casting, forging, rolling, welding or cutting, improve the plasticity and toughness, homogenize the chemical composition, remove the residual stress, or obtain the expected physical properties. There are many annealing processes with different purposes, such as recrystallization annealing, isothermal annealing, homogenization annealing, spheroidization annealing, stress removal annealing, recrystallization annealing, stabilization annealing, magnetic field annealing and so on.
One of the most important process parameters of annealing is the maximum heating temperature (annealing temperature). The selection of annealing heating temperature of most alloys is based on the phase diagram of the alloy system. For example, carbon steel is based on the iron carbon balance diagram. The annealing temperature of various steels (including carbon steel and alloy steel) is at a temperature above AC3, above AC1 or below of each steel according to the specific annealing purpose. The annealing temperature of various non-ferrous alloys is below the solidus temperature and above or below the solidus temperature of each alloy.
