1. Expansion joints(compensators)

  • Introduction

Expansion joints are commonly referred to as compensators. They consist of one or more bellows (an elastic component) as the main working body, as well as connectors at both ends, supports, flanges, conduits, and other accessories. Expansion joints are a flexible structures installed on vessel shells or pipelines to compensate for additional stresses caused by temperature differences and mechanical vibrations. By utilizing the effective expansion and contraction of the bellows, they compensate dimensional changes in pipelines, conduits, vessels and so on, which are caused by thermal expansion and contraction, or compensate for axial, lateral, and angular displacements of pipelines, conduits, vessels, etc. They can also be used for noise and vibration reduction and heating supply systems. In order to prevent deformation or damage to heating pipelines caused by thermal expansion or temperature stress when the heating pipelines are heated, compensators need to be installed on the pipelines to compensate for thermal expansion of the pipelines, thereby reducing the stress on the pipeline walls and the forces exerting on valves or support structures.

As expansion joints are elastic compensating components capable of free expansion and contraction, they have the advantages of reliable operation, good performance, and compact structure,and others.Hence they are widely used in departments such as chemical engineering, metallurgy,nuclear energy,and the like. There are various forms of expansion joints used on vessels, with the U-shaped expansion joint being the most widely used in terms of the shape of bellows, followed by Ω-shaped and C-shaped joints. As for expansion joints used on pipelines, they are classified according to structural compensation into universal expansion joint, pressure balanced expansion joint, hinged expansion joint, and gimbal expansion joint.

Bellows Expansion Joint

 

A bellows expansion joint is an expansion joint made of metal bellows. It can expand and contract along the axial direction of the pipeline, and also allows a small amount of bending. In order to prevent exceeding the allowable compensation amount, protective rods or rings are installed at both ends of the bellows, and guide supports are installed on both ends of the connected pipelines. There are also angular and lateral expansion joints, which can be used to compensate for rotational deformations and lateral deformations of pipelines. The advantages of these expansion joints are space-saving, material-saving, easy standardization, and mass production, but the disadvantage is the relatively short lifespan. Bellows expansion joints are generally used in short pipelines with low temperature and pressure. With the improvement of bellows production technology, the application scope of this type of expansion joint is expanding. Currently, bellows expansion joints can be used in pipe systems with a maximum pressure of 6.0 MPa.
Slip-Type Expansion JointThe slip-type expansion joint consists of inner and outer sleeves capable of relative axial movement. The space between the inner and outer sleeves is sealed with stuffing box. During use, keep both ends of the pipes moving on the same axis. The product mainly consists of sleeves (core tubes), shells, sealing materials, etc. It is used to compensate for axial expansion and axial rotation by arbitrary angle of pipelines. It has the characteristics of small volume and large compensation amount, suitable for hot water, steam, and grease media. By sliding the sleeve against the outer sleeve, it can compensate the thermal expansion. The inner sleeve of the slip-type expansion joint is connected to the pipeline and adopts the principle and structure of high-performance self-sealing dynamic seal. It can slide freely inside the shell with the expansion and contraction of the pipeline, and can meet the sealing requirements of any pipeline. A type of seal with new synthetic material is used between the shell and the inner sleeve, which can withstand high temperatures, possess corrosion resistance, and aging resistance, with an applicable temperature range of -40 to 150 degrees Celsius, and up to 350 degrees Celsius under special circumstances. It can not only ensure axial sliding but also prevent leakage of the medium inside the pipe.
Non-metallic Expansion JointRubber Expansion JointComposed of rubber and rubber-fiber composite materials, steel flanges, sleeves, and insulation materials, it is mainly used for flexible connections between various fans and ducts. Its functions include shock absorption, noise reduction, sealing, medium resistance, easy displacement and installation. It is an ideal accessory for shock absorption, noise reduction, smoke and dust removal in the field of environmental protection.
Fabric Expansion JointThe fabric expansion joint is mainly made of fiber fabric, rubber, and other high temperature resistant materials. It can compensate for the vibration and deformation of fans and ducts.Fabric expansion joints can compensate for axial, lateral, and angular products, with features such as no thrust, simplified support design, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, noise reduction, vibration reduction,and others.It is particularly suitable for hot blast pipes and smoke and dust pipeline of power plant.The non-metallic compensator's fiber fabric and insulation cotton itself have the functions of sound absorption and vibration isolation, therefore they can effectively reducing the noise and vibration of boiler, fan, and other systems. 2. Rubber Expansion Joints

  • Introduction:

Rubber expansion joints generally consist of smooth waveform compensation elements with rubber flanges at both ends and metal flanges. The metal flanges commonly adopt a loose tube construction. The surface of the waveform compensation element is rubber, and the inner layer consists of several layers of reinforced fiber or steel strip (wire) reinforced interlayer. The reinforced fiber or steel strip (wire) reinforced interlayer extends to the rubber flanges at both ends, and there is a hard steel wire skeleton inside the flanges. Rubber expansion joints have significant displacement compensation capabilities and can compensate for axial, lateral, and angular displacements. They also have the ability to reduce noise, decrease vibration, and provide certain corrosion resistance. With features such as high pressure resistance, good elasticity, large displacement, effective vibration absorption and noise reduction, and easy installation, they can be widely used in pipeline systems for water supply and drainage, HVAC, fire protection, compressors, papermaking, pharmaceuticals, ships, pumps, fans, etc.

Selection Instructions

  • Flexible rubber joints selection instructions:

Rubber joints are generally suitable for temperature from -200°C to 70°C. The instantaneous temperature can reach 115°C, and the operating temperature is from 70°C to 115°C.For flange-connected rubber joints with high working pressure and temperature (diameter above 200, temperature above 70°C, working pressure above 1.5MPa), flange rubber joints with limited devices can be selected.

When installing flange-connected rubber joints, the bolts connecting the flanges should be threaded from the inside of the flanges to both ends of the flanges, intersecting with washers or spring washers. The bolts should be tightened diagonally step by step.

For rubber joints connected by the union swivel, the union swivel at both ends should not be swapped during installation to avoid product leakage or damage.
