Ceramic membrane is a kind of inorganic membrane, belongs to the solid membrane material in the membrane separation technology, mainly with different specifications of alumina, zirconia, titanium oxide and silicon oxide inorganic ceramic materials as the support body, by surface coating, high temperature firing. Commercial ceramic membranes usually have a three-layer structure (porous support layer, transition layer and separation layer), which is asymmetrical distribution, and its pore size ranges from 0.8nm to 1μm, and the filtration accuracy covers microfiltration, ultrafiltration and nanofiltration levels.

According to the different supporting body, the configuration of ceramic membrane can be divided into three kinds: plate, tube and multi-channel. Ceramic membrane due to acid and alkali resistance, high temperature resistance and chemical stability in extreme environments, but also because the commercial ceramic membrane aperture is small (usually less than 0.2μm), can successfully achieve molecular filtration, so it is mainly used for liquid, gaseous mixture filtration separation, can replace the traditional centrifugation, evaporation, distillation, filtration and other separation technology, To achieve the goal of improving product quality and reducing production cost, it has a wide application prospect in harsh environment such as petroleum and chemical industry.

Compared with traditional polymer separation membrane materials, ceramic membrane has good chemical stability and can resist acid, alkali and organic solvent. High mechanical strength, reversible washing; Strong anti-microbial ability; High temperature resistance; The advantages of narrow aperture distribution and high separation efficiency have been widely used in the food industry, biological engineering, environmental engineering, chemical industry, petrochemical industry, metallurgical industry and other fields, and its market sales are developing at an annual growth rate of 30%. The shortcomings of ceramic film lie in the high cost, the brittleness of inorganic material and the small elasticity, which bring certain difficulties to the molding processing and component equipment of the film.

 

How it Works

 

The ceramic membrane separation process is a "cross-flow filtration" form of fluid separation process: the raw material liquid flows at high speed in the membrane tube, and the clarified penetrant containing small molecular components passes through the membrane in the vertical direction under the pressure drive, and the cloudy concentrated liquid containing large molecular components is trapped by the membrane, so that the fluid can achieve the purpose of separation, concentration and purification.

The ceramic membrane is an asymmetric composite membrane made by sol-gel method or other processes, which is composed of a ceramic carrier with a porosity of 30%~50% and a pore size of 50nm~15μm. The structure of the ceramic membrane used for separation is usually sandwich-like: the support layer (also known as the carrier layer), the transition layer (also known as the intermediate layer), and the membrane layer (also known as the separation layer). The pore size of the supporting layer is generally 1~20μm, and the porosity is 30%~65%, which is used to increase the mechanical strength of the film. The pore size of the middle layer is smaller than that of the support layer, and its function is to prevent the particle penetration into the porous support layer during the preparation of the film layer. The thickness is about 20~60μm, and the porosity is 30%~40%. The membrane has a separation function, the pore size ranges from 0.8nm to 1μm, the thickness is about 3~10μm, and the porosity is 40%~55%. The pore size distribution of the whole membrane gradually decreases from the support layer to the membrane layer, forming an asymmetric structure distribution.

According to the pore size, ceramic membranes can be divided into microfiltration (pore size greater than 50nm), ultrafiltration (pore size 2-50nm), nanofiltration (pore size less than 2nm) and other types. When separation is carried out, under the action of external forces, small molecular substances pass through the membrane, and large molecular substances are trapped by the membrane, so as to achieve the purposes of separation, concentration, purification, impurity removal, bacterialization and so on.

 

Applications

 

The research of ceramic membranes began in the 1940s, and its development can be divided into three stages: the nuclear industry period for isotope separation of uranium, the liquid separation period dominated by inorganic microfiltration membranes and ultrafiltration membranes, and the comprehensive development period with membrane catalytic reactions as the core. In the early 1980s, after it was successfully promoted and applied in the dairy industry and beverage (wine, beer, cider) industry in France, ceramic membrane separation technology and industrial status were gradually established, and the application has also been extended to the food industry, biological engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, petrochemical industry, metallurgical industry and other fields, becoming an important new technology for precision filtration and separation under harsh conditions. In 1998, there were 452 film and film equipment manufacturers and operating companies announced on the Internet, including 50 metal film factories and 94 ceramic film production plants.
