Fiber media converter can be divided into single 10M, 100M, 1000M media converters, 10/100M adaptive and 10/100/1000M adaptive fiber media converters. Most of single 10M, 100M and 1000M media converter work in the physical layer, and the media converter work on this layer forward data in bits . The advantages of this method is fast forwarding speed and low delay, and is suitable for speed fixed link. 10/100M, 10/100/1000M optical transceiver is working on data link layer, they use store and forward scheme, under such a data forwarding mechanism, it will read source MAC address, destination MAC address and payload data of each received packet. And the packet is forwarded out after the CRC cyclic redundancy check is completed. The benefits of store and forward is it can prevent some wrong frame go into the network communication and taking up valuable cyber source, meanwhile it also can effectively avoid packet loss due to network congestion, store and forward also means that the data can be put on the cache of the media converter when data link is saturated and can be forwarded when the link is idle. This not only reduces the possibility of data conflict, but also ensures the reliability of data transmission. Therefore, 10/100M and 10/100/1000M fiber media converter are suitable for links with an unstable speed.
