Located close to the throttle body on the inlet manifold, the MAP sensor provides intake manifold pressure information to the Engine Control Unit or ECU, enabling it to calculate air density and to ascertain the correct air-fuel mixture for quality combustion. Furthermore, the ECU uses this data to compute engine load, fuel injection pulse and adjust ignition timing accordingly.

MAP sensor data can be used to detect throttle performance issues, to look for a vacuum leak in the intake manifold, to obtain air mass data with the help of engine speed and IAT data, and also to verify the operation of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation or EGR valve.
