Broadly speaking, a Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor measures the intake manifold pressure. Located close to the throttle body on the inlet manifold, the MAP sensor provides intake manifold pressure information to the Engine Control Unit or ECU, enabling it to calculate air density and to ascertain the correct air-fuel mixture for quality combustion. Furthermore, the ECU uses this data to compute engine load, fuel injection pulse and adjust ignition timing accordingly.
MAP sensor data can be used to detect throttle performance issues, to look for a vacuum leak in the intake manifold, to obtain air mass data with the help of engine speed and IAT data, and also to verify the operation of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation or EGR valve. It also incidentally works as a contingency in vehicles with a mass airflow sensor, which estimates air density and volume, by managing the EGR valve.
MAP sensor malfunctioning could be triggered due to various reasons like contamination, clogging, damage from intense engine heat and vibration damage owing to prolonged presence in the engine compartment.
Key symptoms of a failing MAP sensor include engine not starting or having difficulty in starting, detonation or misfire, significant increase in fuel consumption, lack of power, and the illumination of the "check engine light".
