Water Heaters Magnesium Anode Cathodic Protection Easy Installation
Introduction:
Magnesium anodes are also known as soft water anodes, and they protect steel by sacrificial electrochemical action. This type of galvanic protection is called "sacrificial"; magnesium rods (anode) corrode rather than steel (cathode). This principle of electrolytic corrosion control is called "cathodic protection". Because the cathode surface does not rust, the steel is protected.
Cathodic protection is often used to mitigate corrosion damage to
active metal surfaces. It is used worldwide to protect pipelines,
water treatment plants, above and submerged storage tanks, ships
and hulls, offshore production platforms, concrete structures and
rebar in docks, among others.

How magnesium anodes work
Magnesium anodes protect steel through sacrificial electrochemistry. Magnesium is negatively charged relative to steel. When the magnesium rod is connected to the steel tank by electrical conductors, the steel tank is then filled with water, and current will continuously flow through the water between the magnesium rod and any exposed steel areas on the wall. The circuit is completed back to the magnesium rod through the water tank. This protective current is generated by magnesium releasing ions, which can lead to corrosion in the anode area. This type of galvanic protection is called "sacrificial"; the magnesium rod (anode) corrodes rather than the can (cathode). This principle of electrolytic corrosion control is called "cathodic protection". Because the cathode surface does not rust, the tank is protected.
Applications:
Magnesium sacrificial anode is not only suitable for cathodic protection of machinery and equipment in fresh water and seawater, port facilities, ships, offshore drilling, etc., but also can be used to protect steel structures immersed in seawater, such as ship hulls and other steel and aluminum Alloy materials, corrosion-resistant parts such as main submarine valves, cooling circulation systems, seawater inlets, pipes, filters, coolers, etc., which affect the safety of ship navigation.
