Titanium is considered a rare metal because of its dispersed nature and difficult to extract. But its relative abundance ranks tenth among all the elements. Titanium ores are mainly ilmenite and rutile, widely distributed in the earth's crust and lithosphere. Titanium is also found in almost all living things, rocks, water and soil. Titanium can be fused with other elements such as iron, aluminum, vanadium or molybdenum to create high-strength light alloys that are used in a wide range of applications, including aerospace, military, industrial processes, automobiles, agricultural food, medicine, kitchen appliances, sporting goods, jewelry and mobile phones. Two of the most useful properties of titanium are corrosion resistance and the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal. In its non-alloyed state, titanium is as strong as some steels, but 45% lighter. Titanium has similar chemical and physical properties to zirconium because both have the same number of valence electrons and belong to the same group of elements in the periodic table. Due to the high melting point of titanium, small specific gravity, high specific strength, good toughness, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, low thermal conductivity, high and low temperature tolerance, under the condition of rapid cooling and heat stress is small, titanium is used in aviation, aerospace and other high-tech fields. With the continuous promotion to chemical industry, petroleum, electricity, seawater desalination, construction, daily necessities and other industries, titanium metal is increasingly valued by people.
Titanium bars have good thermal strength, good weldability and excellent corrosion resistance. Its disadvantage is low strength at room temperature. It is usually used as heat-resistant and corrosion resistant material. Titanium alloy is widely used in various fields because of its high specific strength, good corrosion resistance and good heat resistance. The industrial production of titanium began in 1948, and the demand of the aviation industry made the titanium industry develop at an average annual rate of about 8%. At present, the annual output of international titanium alloy processing materials has reached 4 million tons, and there are nearly 30 kinds of titanium alloy trademarks. Titanium alloy is mainly used to manufacture aircraft engine compressor parts, followed by layout parts of rockets, missiles and high-speed aircraft. In the mid-1960s, titanium and its alloys have been used in general industries, such as electrodes for electrolytic industry, condensers for power stations, oil refining and desalination heaters and environmental pollution control equipment. Titanium and its alloys have become an anticorrosion material.
