Unlike 304L, Type 304H has a higher carbon content, making this steel more suitable for use in applications where high temperatures are present. It is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloy, and the higher the carbon content, the higher the tensile and yield strengths. Due to the thermal resistance of this grade, this material is recommended for ASME pressure vessels with operating temperatures above 815 °C.

The higher carbon content of 304H increases its strength, so 304H has greater ASTM A213 tensile and yield strengths than 304L. At temperatures up to 500 °C, 304H has greater short- and long-term creep strength than 304L, and 304H is more resistant to sensitization than 304L. In ASME pressure vessels used above 815°C, the carbon content of 304H must be 0.04% - 0.1%. 304H is required in such applications.

Alloy 304H is most commonly used in refineries. It is also used in boilers, heat exchanger tubes, condenser tubes, piping, cooling towers, steam discharge and stainless steel reheater tubes and superheater tubes in power plants. It is also found in fertilizers and chemical plants.

 

HFW finned tube is the abbreviation of high frequency welded spiral solid finned tube.

Spiral finned tubes offer designers high thermal efficiency and a compact design solution for a full range of heat exchangers using clean flue gas. There are two types of spiral finned tubes: solid type and serrated type.

 

Helical solid finned tubes are made by helically wrapping a continuous strip of fins around the tube. High frequency resistance welding typically uses a frequency of 400 kHz. The fins are wrapped around the tube and welded continuously. The fin tape is helically wound on the tube and continuously welded to the base tube along the root of the helix by a high frequency electrical process. The fin strips are held under tension and laterally constrained as they are formed around the tube, ensuring firm contact between the fin strips and the surface of the base tube. Using the gas metal arc welding process, the continuous welding is made at the point where the fin strip first begins to bend around the diameter of the pipe.

The fins are cut from metal strips and then helically wound around the tube. Others are the same as high-frequency welded solid finned tubes.

Important features of this configuration are efficiency, effective fin-to-tube bonding under all temperature and pressure conditions, and ability to withstand high temperatures on the fin side. This serrated fin configuration can withstand fin fouling even better if this is an issue in the application. This provides better heat transfer performance compared to solid fins.
