Barium Fluoride—BaF2

Description

Barium Fluoride (BaF2) crystals are transparent in wide spectrum band. The product finds use in windows, lenses of special types of objectives, as mirrors substrate in optical systems operating in UV and IR spectrum band.

Barium Fluoride is used for windows, lenses and prisms, particularly when transmission into the ultraviolet is desired. The transmission range of BaF2 is from 0.2 to 14m. Transmission in the VUV is degraded by prolonged exposure to moist atmosphere, but it is not significantly degraded by exposure to high energy radiation.

Barium Fluoride is the most resistant fluoride to high energy radiation but does not have VUV transmission of other types. Barium Fluoride is suitable for applications in the IR band (8 to 14 m) and is often used as an IR viewport window for thermographs. The material is relatively hard but is very sensitive to thermal schock.

Barium fluoride is grown by vacuum Stockbarger technique. In addition, BaF2 is usually used as scintillator for gamma detection. It is the fastest scintillating crystals up to now. Besides it can also be used as substrate for some applications.
