Castellated Edges PCB

Plated half-holes or castellated holes are plated half holes with half of the vias slotted on the edges of the board. They are commonly used for breakout boards or small modules. These half holes serve as pads intended to create a link between the module board and the board that it will be soldered onto.Castellated Edges are found on 2 Layer PCBs and above. Because of relatively higher rejection rate, castellated edges PCB price is more expensive than ordinary PCB.

How does the castellated edges PCBs manufactured

Linked has adopted a new approach to the fabrication of castellated/plated half-holes on PCB boards and at the same time it will increase design flexibility without compromising on quality.

First, all holes are made as the ordinary PTH the PCB boards. A milling tool is then used to cut the holes, along with the copper, in half. Since copper is much more difficuilt to mill and will likely result the bit to break, heavy duty milling bits are used at a higher speed. Each half hole is then inspected in a dedicated station and deburred if necessary. And this requires dedicated skills to adjust the routing machine.
