Metal structured packing is a type of packing used in absorption and distillation towers, chemical reactors, and other vessels. It consists of thin corrugated metallic plates or wire gauze that are arranged in a uniform geometry and then neatly piled in the tower.
Metal structured packing has several key benefits. In addition to being able to create a large surface area, it is also low pressure drop, has great heat and mass transfer efficiency, and provides uniform fluid distribution.
Metal tower packings are assembled by rolling small profile and bellows in metallic sheet surface. It is especially suitable for applications like vacuum or pressure operations due to its low resistance, uniform gas-liquid distribution, high efficiency, big flux, and lack of enlarging effects.
The new tower design has the high capacity to reduce the diameter significantly, while the renovation of old towers can increase its capacity dramatically. The tower has a large specific surface area, resulting in a high separation efficiency compared to random packing. On the other hand, this feature leads to a low pressure drop, providing large energy savings. This design also features a large flexibility and few scaling issues. This technology applies to all tower diameters. Furthermore, it is structurally designed to have a strong resistance to acid and alkali corrosion, particularly concerning H2S, naphthenic acid, and Cl-.
