Product material characteristics
Mechanical properties
The mechanical properties of gray cast iron are related to the
structure of the matrix and the shape of graphite. The flake
graphite in gray cast iron severely splits the matrix, and it is
easy to cause stress concentration at the sharp corners of the
graphite. The tensile strength, plasticity and toughness of gray
cast iron are much lower than steel, but the compressive strength
is equivalent to steel, and it is also commonly used cast iron.
Cast iron with the worst mechanical properties among the pieces. At
the same time, the matrix structure also has a certain influence on
the mechanical properties of gray cast iron. The graphite flakes of
ferrite-based gray cast iron have the lowest strength and hardness,
so it is less used; the graphite flakes of pearlite-based gray cast
iron are small and have higher The strength and hardness are mainly
used to make more important castings; the graphite flakes of
ferrite-pearlite matrix gray cast iron are slightly larger than
pearlite gray cast iron, and the performance is not as good as
pearlite gray cast iron. Therefore, gray cast iron with a pearlite
matrix is more commonly used in the industry.
Other properties
Gray cast iron has good casting performance, good vibration
damping, good wear resistance, good cutting performance, and low
notch sensitivity.
Influencing factors of gray cast iron properties
①The influence of chemical composition. The production is mainly to
control the mass fraction of carbon and silicon. If the mass
fraction of carbon and silicon is too low, the cast iron is prone
to white-mouth structure, and the mechanical properties and casting
properties are very low; when the mass fraction of carbon and
silicon is too high, the graphite flakes are too large and thick,
and even graphite floats on the surface of the molten iron. Reduce
the performance and quality of castings. Therefore, the carbon and
silicon content in gray cast iron is generally controlled at
2%~4%C; 1.0%~2.0%Si; 0.5%~1.4%Mn.
②The influence of cooling rate: Under certain casting process
conditions, the cooling rate of castings has a great influence on
the degree of graphite formation. As the wall thickness of the
casting increases, the cooling rate slows down, and the carbon
atoms have sufficient diffusion time, which is conducive to the
full progress of the graphitization process. The room temperature
structure is easy to form a gray iron structure; but the
thin-walled parts are cold during the cooling process. If the speed
is too fast, it is easy to form a white iron structure.
