The DIP switch is widely used in industry-standard architecture (ISA) computer expansion cards to select
interrupt requests (IRQs) and memory addresses. Before the advent of cheaper battery-operated RAM,
DIP switches were also used in 1980s arcades to set game parameters, such as difficulty, or the amount of
coins needed for each slot. DIP switches were also used in garage door openers and some early wireless
phones to set security codes. Security codes can be set with up to 12 switches to avoid electromagnetic
interference with other garage door openersswitches. When one DIP switch switches position, the other
DIP switch switches position. Each redirects current to a different path in its circuit. Technically, multiple DIP
switches can be connected in this arrangement, allowing for multiple poles and multiple throws.
