1. Expansion joints(compensators)

  • Introduction to Expansion Joints

Expansion joints, commonly known as compensators, are mechanical devices that play a crucial role in compensating for stresses in various systems. They are comprised of one or more bellows, an elastic component serving as the main working body, along with connectors, supports, flanges, conduits, and various other accessories.

  • Functionality of Expansion Joints

Expansion joints are flexible structures designed to be installed on vessel shells or pipelines. Their primary purpose is to compensate for the additional stresses caused by temperature differences and mechanical vibrations. By leveraging the effective expansion and contraction of the bellows, these joints can balance out dimensional changes in pipelines, conduits, vessels, and other structures resulting from thermal expansion and contraction. They also aid in compensating for axial, lateral, and angular displacements in these systems.

  • Applications of Expansion Joints

Expansion joints have a wide range of applications, including noise and vibration reduction in various systems as well as in heating supply systems. Specifically, in heating pipelines, compensators are crucial for preventing deformation or damage caused by thermal expansion or temperature stress when the pipelines are heated. By installing compensators on these pipelines, they help balance out the thermal expansion, thereby reducing the stress on the pipeline walls and the forces acting on valves or support structures.

  • Advantages and Uses of Expansion Joints

As elastic compensating components capable of free expansion and contraction, expansion joints offer several advantages, including reliable operation, good performance, and a compact structure. These attributes have led to their widespread usage in various industries such as chemical engineering, metallurgy, nuclear energy, and more.

The forms of expansion joints vary depending on their application. In vessels, the U-shaped expansion joint is the most commonly used in terms of bellows shape, followed by Ω-shaped and C-shaped joints. When used in pipelines, expansion joints are classified based on structural compensation methods, including universal expansion joints, pressure balanced expansion joints, hinged expansion joints, and gimbal expansion joints.

Metal Expansion Joint

ElbowExpansion Joint

Bend the pipe into a U-shaped or other shape, also known as tension bends, are a type of expansion joint that utilizes the elastic deformation ability of the form to compensate. Its advantages are good strength, long service life, and on-site production. The disadvantages are space-consuming, high steel consumption, and high friction resistance. This type of expansion joint is widely used in various steam piping and long pipes.

Bellows Expansion Joint

A bellows expansion joint is a specialized type of expansion joint crafted from metal bellows. This design allows for expansion and contraction along the axial direction of the pipeline, while also accommodating a small degree of bending.

  • Structural Components and Safety Measures

To ensure that the bellows do not exceed their allowable compensation amount, protective rods or rings are installed at both ends. Additionally, guide supports are positioned on both ends of the connected pipelines to provide stability.

  • Types of Bellows Expansion Joints

There are also angular and lateral expansion joints available, which serve to compensate for rotational deformations and lateral deformations in pipelines.

  • Advantages and Disadvantages

The advantages of bellows expansion joints lie in their space-saving design, material efficiency, ease of standardization, and suitability for mass production. However, their relatively short lifespan is a notable disadvantage.

  • Applications and Capabilities

Bellows expansion joints are typically utilized in short pipelines with low temperatures and pressures. However, with advancements in bellows production technology, the scope of applications for this type of expansion joint has broadened. Currently, bellows expansion joints can be found in pipe systems with a maximum pressure of 6.0 MPa.

Slip-Type Expansion Joint

The slip-type expansion joint consists of inner and outer sleeves capable of relative axial movement, sealed with stuffing box. It compensates for axial expansion and rotation of pipelines with small volume and large compensation, suitable for hot water, steam, and grease. Sliding against the outer sleeve, it compensates thermal expansion, with a high-performance self-sealing dynamic seal for free movement. With new synthetic material seals, it withstands high temperatures, corrosion, and aging, with a temperature range from -40 to 150 degrees Celsius, up to 350 degrees Celsius. Preventing medium leakage, it meets sealing requirements for any pipeline.

Non-metallic Expansion Joint

Rubber Expansion Joint

Composed of rubber and rubber-fiber composite materials, steel flanges, sleeves, and insulation materials, it is mainly used for flexible connections between various fans and ducts. Its functions include shock absorption, noise reduction, sealing, medium resistance, easy displacement and installation. It is an ideal accessory for shock absorption, noise reduction, smoke and dust removal in the field of environmental protection.

Fabric Expansion Joint

The fabric expansion joint is mainly made of fiber fabric, rubber, and other high temperature resistant materials. It can compensate for the vibration and deformation of fans and ducts.Fabric expansion joints can compensate for axial, lateral, and angular products, with features such as no thrust, simplified support design, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, noise reduction, vibration reduction, and others. It is particularly suitable for hot blast pipes and smoke and dust pipeline of power plant. The non-metallic compensator's fiber fabric and insulation cotton itself have the functions of sound absorption and vibration isolation, therefore they can effectively reducing the noise and vibration of boiler, fan, and other systems. Simple structure, light weight, and easy maintenance.
