Expansion joints

  • Introduction

Expansion joints, or compensators, feature bellows (elastic components) along with connectors, supports, and accessories. They flexibly compensate for stresses from temperature changes and vibrations in vessel shells and pipelines. By expanding and contracting, they mitigate dimensional changes and displacements in pipelines, vessels, etc. Used for noise reduction, heating systems, and preventing pipeline damage due to thermal expansion. Forms include U-shaped, Ω-shaped, and C-shaped bellows for vessels, and universal, pressure balanced, hinged, and gimbal joints for pipelines. Widely applied in chemical, metallurgy, and nuclear industries.

  • Classification

Main ItemClassificationDescription
Metal Expansion JointElbowExpansion JointBend the pipe into a U-shaped or other shape, also known as tension bends, are a type of expansion joint that utilizes the elastic deformation ability of the form to compensate. Its advantages are good strength, long service life, and on-site production. The disadvantages are space-consuming, high steel consumption, and high friction resistance. This type of expansion joint is widely used in various steam piping and long pipes.

Bellows Expansion Joint

A bellows expansion joint, crafted from metal bellows, enables axial expansion and contraction along the pipeline, with slight bending capability. Protective rods or rings prevent overextension, while guide supports maintain alignment. Angular and lateral expansion joints compensate for rotational and lateral deformations. While these joints offer space and material savings, standardization, and mass production benefits, their shorter lifespan is a drawback. Typically used in short pipelines with low temperature and pressure, advancements in production technology are broadening their applications, now suitable for pipe systems with pressures up to 6.0 MPa.
Slip-Type Expansion JointThe slip-type expansion joint comprises inner and outer sleeves allowing relative axial movement, sealed with a stuffing box. It maintains alignment of both pipe ends on the same axis. Made primarily of sleeves, shells, and sealing materials, it compensates for axial expansion and rotation in pipelines at any angle. Compact yet highly compensating, it suits hot water, steam, and grease media. By sliding the sleeve against the outer one, it addresses thermal expansion. Equipped with a high-performance self-sealing dynamic seal, the inner sleeve freely moves within the shell, meeting sealing needs for any pipeline. Enhanced with synthetic material seals, it withstands high temperatures and corrosion, with an applicable temperature range of -40 to 150 degrees Celsius, extendable to 350 degrees Celsius under special conditions. It ensures axial sliding and prevents medium leakage inside the pipe..
Non-metallic Expansion JointRubber Expansion JointComposed of rubber and rubber-fiber composite materials, steel flanges, sleeves, and insulation materials, it is mainly used for flexible connections between various fans and ducts. Its functions include shock absorption, noise reduction, sealing, medium resistance, easy displacement and installation. It is an ideal accessory for shock absorption, noise reduction, smoke and dust removal in the field of environmental protection.
Fabric Expansion JointFabric expansion joints are crafted from fiber fabric, rubber, and heat-resistant materials. They offset fan and duct vibrations and deformations, accommodating axial, lateral, and angular displacements. Features include zero thrust, simplified supports, corrosion and heat resistance, noise and vibration reduction. Ideal for hot blast pipes and power plant smoke/dust pipelines, they utilize sound-absorbing fabric and insulation cotton to minimize boiler, fan, and system noise and vibrations. Lightweight, simple, and easy to maintain.
