The ASTM B861 GR2 Titanium Heat Exchanger Tube offers unmatched corrosion resistance, moderate strength, and reliability in extreme environments, making it a premium choice for critical thermal applications. Grade 2 titanium (UNS R50400), classified as commercially pure (CP) titanium.

 

 

Chemical Composition:

 

  • Titanium (Ti): ≥ 98.9%
  • Iron (Fe): ≤ 0.30%
  • Oxygen (O): ≤ 0.25%
  • Nitrogen (N): ≤ 0.03%
  • Carbon (C): ≤ 0.08%
  • Hydrogen (H): ≤ 0.015%
  • Note: Grade 2 is unalloyed but may contain trace elements; it is not a traditional alloy like Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V).

 

Manufacturing Standard:

ASTM B861: Specifies requirements for seamless titanium and titanium-alloy tubes for condensers and heat exchangers. Covers Grades 1–38, with GR2 being common for corrosion resistance.

 

Manufacturing Process:

  • Seamless Construction: Produced via pilgering or extrusion to ensure uniformity and strength.

  • Cold Worked and Annealed: Enhances mechanical properties and ductility.

 

Dimensions and Tolerances:

 

  • Diameter: Typically 1/8" to 5" OD, with custom sizes available.

  • Wall Thickness: Ranges from 0.028" to 0.165", adhering to ASME B36.19M.

  • Length: Standard lengths up to 12m; ends may be plain, beveled, or threaded per application needs.

  • Tolerances: Strict adherence to ASTM B861 for OD (±0.005"), WT (±10%), and straightness

 

Mechanical Properties:

 

  • Tensile Strength: ≥ 345 MPa (50 ksi)

  • Yield Strength (0.2% offset): ≥ 275 MPa (40 ksi)

  • Elongation: ≥ 20% in 2 inches

  • Hardness: ≤ 140 HB (Brinell)

 

Application:

 

  1. Heat Exchangers for Corrosive Environments: GR2 titanium is highly resistant to a wide range of chemicals, including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and chlorides. Therefore, it is used in heat exchangers within chemical and petrochemical plants where highly corrosive substances are processed.
  2. Reactors and Cooling Systems: GR2 titanium tubes are used in reactors and cooling systems in petrochemical plants, where they can withstand aggressive corrosive media and high-temperature conditions.
  3.
