Ethernet is the most widely used communication protocol. The data transmission rate of Ethernet is from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps and developed to 1 Gbps (1000 Mbps), then developed to multi-gigabit range: 10 Gbps, 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps. With the development of data transmission rates, links have been developed from parallel interfaces (MII, GMII) to serial links (GE, SGMII, XAUI, etc.)

GMII is a 8bit parallel synchronous optical transceiver interface, using 8 bit interface data and working clock 125MHz, so the transmission rate can reach 1000Mbps. At the same time, it is compatible with the 10/100 Mbps working mode specified by MII.

RMII: Reduced Media Independent Interface is one of the standard Ethernet interfaces, with less I/O transmission than MII.

SGMII-Serial Gigabit Media Independent Interface is the interface between PHY and MAC. It is similar to GMII and RGMII, but GMII and RGMII are all parallel. Moreover, it needs the clock on the road, PCB wiring is relatively cumbersome, and it is not suitable for backplane application. And SGMII is serial and does not need to provide another clock, and both MAC and PHY need CDR to restore the clock. And SGMII is 8B/10b coded, and the rate is 1.25G.

XGMII--10 Gigabit Media Independent Interface is 10Gb media independent interface, X corresponding to the Rome number 10, SGMII is serial Gigabit media independent interface, SGMII provides full duplex BASE-T function with rate of 10/100/1000 Mbps, in the optical transmission, it is used in Ethernet.

SGMII SFP optical transceiver and SFP fiber optic transceiver has vary great difference, the 100M rate can be used on Gigabit SFP port of SGMII SFP optical transceiver but it can not used on common SFP optical transceiver, such differences can facilitate customers after the network upgrade.

With the increasing demand for information flow, the traditional parallel interface technology has become a bottleneck to further improve the data transmission rate. The serial communication technology mainly used for optical fiber communication - SERDES in the past, is replacing the traditional parallel bus and becoming the mainstream of high speed interface technology. SERDES is the abbreviation of SERializer/DESerializer. It is a time division multiplexing (TDM) and point to point communication technology, that is, multiple low-speed parallel signals at the transmitter side are converted to high-speed serial signals, transmitted through the media (optical cable or copper wire), and finally, the high-speed serial signals at the receiver are reconverted to low-speed parallel signals. This point to point serial communication technology makes full use of the channel capacity of the transmission media, reducing the number of transmission channels and device pins, thus greatly reducing the communication cost.
