Low cost and high reliability are the basic requirements for optical fiber splitter in FTTH engineering. Optical fiber splitter can be divided into two types in terms of technology type: optical fiber fused biconical taper and planar integrated optical waveguide. Also named as FBT and PLC.

Optical fiber fused taper technology is the most mature technology for 2 channels fiber splitter, at present optical splitter are mainly all fiber optical splitter, its main features are: mature technology, convenient connection with fiber, low insertion loss. But with the increasing channel number of power, such as 1 x 8 optical fiber splitter or more, if we make it with FBT technology, the fiber splitter will be with large volume, low efficiency, high cost, and poor light uniformity. Furthermore, the characteristics of the fiber optic splitter such as the pass band based on fused biconical taper have great limitations.

PLC splitter is an integrated optical device based on planar technology. Different from traditional FBT devices, it uses semiconductor technology to integrate optical components of different functions into a single chip. It is the basic technology to realize the integration, large scale and miniaturization of optoelectronic devices. Compared with fused biconical taper technology, planar waveguide technology has the characteristics of stable performance, low cost, and suitable for large-scale production. So, in the future the FTTH System, FBT splitter or coupler will no longer be used, and planar waveguide provides an effective way for the production of access network optical devices with high performance and low cost.

Generally, PLC chip including more than six kinds of materials, they are: LiNbO3, waveguide is formed by diffusion of Ti ions in LiNbO3 crystal and the waveguide structure is diffusion type; III - V group semiconductor compounds ,waveguide is with InP as bottom and a lower cladding layer, using InGaAsP as the core layer, use InP or InP/air as upper cladding layer, the waveguide structure is buried ridge or ridge; SOI (Silicon-on-Insulator), waveguide is fabricated on SOI substrate, bottom, lower cladding layer, core layer and cladding materials are Si, SiO2, Si and air; waveguide structure ss the ridge shape and polymer, and silicon dioxide (SiO2), glass ion exchange etc..

At present, fiber to the home (FTTH) network technology is mature, but it can be rapid development and popularization or not, in addition to the policy side, the most important and the most critical point is to reduce the cost of all aspects of the network. PLC optical splitter is one of the core devices in FTTx network, and its low cost is an important technology development target. From the technical, cost and the characteristics of the waveguide materials given in the above, we can see that silica, polymer and glass are the most suitable for making PLC chips.
