The optical fiber media converter is usually used in pairs, means one set fiber optic media converter use with another media converter. But optical transceiver also can be used with optical fiber switches, normal fiber optic media converter can be used with SFP media converter and so on, in principle, as long as the transmission wavelength is the same, the package format of optical signal is the same , meanwhile support a certain protocol, it will realize optical fiber communication.

Generally dual fiber media converter (normal communications need two fibers) regardless of the transmitter and the receiver, only single transceiver (normal communication needs a fiber only) has different transmitter and receiver.

No matter dual fiber media converter or single fiber media converter, it is able to pair and use with different brands compatible media converter. But different data rate (100M and 1000M) and different wavelengths (1310nm and 1300nm) can not communicate with each other, in addition, even the same brand, a single fiber media converter can not interwork with a dual fiber media converter.

Dual fiber optic media converter has TX port (transmitting port) and RX port (receiving port), the two ports are emitting the same wavelength of 1310nm, the receiving wavelength is also 1310nm, so it requires cross connection of two parallel optical fibers. And single fiber media converter with one port only, it need to achieve both emission and receiving function, it uses wavelength division multiplexing technology (WDM), transmitting two optical signal beams of different wavelength in an optical fiber and achieve transmission and reception. Usually they use wavelengths 1310nm and 1550nm.

Different brands of optical media converter support Ethernet protocol, so fiber media converter with same specifications can communicate with each other, but some fiber optic media converter will add some functions (such as mirroring) and more protocols, then another media converter without these features will not support these additional features.
