Brief Introduction for FA-PLCA1×8SP

 

PDL ( Polarization Dependent Loss ) is a criterial indice to describe the characteristic of fiber plc splitter . It is the maximum transmission difference of optical devices or systems in all polarization states . It is the ratio of the maximum transmission to the minimum transmission of optical devices .

 

PDL is defined as follows :

PDL_{dB}=10log〔Pmax/Pmin〕

 

Pmax and Pmin respectively represent the maximum and minimum output power of the test device ( DUT ) , means when the power is the same, to scan the input light in all possible polarization states and Pmax is the biggest value and Pmin is the smallest value .

 

PDL is a very important characteristic of optical devices. In fact every device has a polarization dependent transmission . Since the polarization of the transmitting signal is not confined to the optical fiber network , the insertion loss of the device varies with the polarization state . This effect can not be controlled in the transmission link and it has serious impact on the transmission quality . The PDL of some devices will bring large power fluctuations , thereby increasing the bit error rate of the system , and even lead to network failure . Combining with polarization mode dispersion ( PMD ) , PDL may become a major reason of pulse distortion and diffusion .
