Lithium-ion batteries offer many advantages over other high-quality rechargeable battery technologies (NiCd or NiMH). They have one of the highest energy densities of any battery technology today (100-265 Wh/kg or 250-670 Wh/L). In addition, lithium-ion batteries can deliver up to 3.6 volts, which is 3 times higher than technologies such as Ni-Cd or Ni-MH. This means they can deliver large amounts of current for high-power applications, and Li-ion batteries are relatively low-maintenance and don't need to be cycled regularly to maintain battery life. Li-ion batteries do not have memory effect, which is a harmful process where repeated partial discharge/charge cycles cause the battery to "remember" a lower capacity. This is an advantage over Ni-Cd and Ni-MH which show this effect. Li-ion batteries also have a low self-discharge rate of about 1.5-2% per month. They do not contain toxic cadmium, which makes them easier to dispose of than nickel-cadmium batteries.

Due to these advantages, lithium-ion batteries have replaced nickel-cadmium batteries as the market leader in portable electronic devices such as smartphones and laptops. Lithium-ion batteries are also used to power electrical systems in some aerospace applications, notably in the new and greener Boeing 787, where weight is an important cost factor. From a clean energy standpoint, much of the promise of lithium-ion technology comes from its potential use in battery-powered vehicles. Currently, the best-selling electric vehicles, the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S, both use lithium-ion batteries as their primary fuel source.
