1 PRODUCT

Stellite X-45 bars, rings, master alloys and various castings.

2 EQUIVALENT DESIGNATION

ASTM A567 Grade 13

3 APPLICATION

Typical application includes aerojet engines and turbochargers cast turbine blades and guide vanes, bearing, housing, medical devices etc.

4 OVERVIEW

Stellite is a hard alloy resistant to various types of wear and corrosion as well as high temperature oxidation. Stellite was invented by American Elwood Hayness in 1907. Stellite alloy is mainly composed of cobalt, containing a considerable amount of nickel-chromium-tungsten and a small amount of molybdenum-niobium-tantalum-titanium lanthanum and other alloying elements, and occasionally also containing a class of iron alloys. According to the composition of the alloy, they can be made into welding wire, powder for hardface surfacing, thermal spraying spray welding and others, but also can be made into casting and forging parts and powder metallurgy parts.

From the late 1950s to the late 1960s, four cast Stellite alloys were widely used in the United States: WI-52, X-45, Mar-M509 and FSX-414.

X-45 is a non-galling high temperature alloys offering heat and thermal shock resistance and high strength service at elevated temperature.

8 HEAT TREATMENT

Castings for heat-resistant service shall be shipped in the as-cast condition without heat treatment, unless otherwise specified.

9 WORKMANSHIP, FINISH AND APPEARANCE

(1) All castings shall be made in a workman-like manner and shall conform substantially to the dimensions on the drawings furnished by the purchaser before manufacture is started, or if a pattern is supplied by the purchaser, castings shall conform substantially to the dimensions predicted by the pattern.

(2) The castings shall be free of injurious defects and shall have been cleaned satisfactorily for their intended use when offered for inspection.

(3) Castings shall not be repaired by peening, plugging, or impregnation.

(4) Defects may be weld repaired only with the consent of the purchaser and only with a process approved by the purchaser. The composition of the deposited metal shall conform to the range in Table 1 for the casting itself; otherwise, the composition used in welding shall be subject to agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser.

(5) Repair welds shall be subjected to the same heat treatment and the same inspection standards required of the castings.
