A Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor measures the intake manifold pressure. Located on the inlet manifold next to or on the throttle body, the sensor provides intake manifold pressure info to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). ECU evaluates the pressure to come up with air density, resulting in better air-fuel mixture for the combustion process. This data ultimately contributes to engine load calculation, fuel injection pulse and ignition timing alteration. Further, it is also useful for below purposes:

Diagnosing throttle performance
Locating any existing vacuum leak in intake manifold
Providing air mass data by integrating engine speed and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor data
Testing Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve functioning in OBD II cars
Working as backup in vehicles with Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF Sensor)
