The composition of brake pads varies based on the application and braking needs, with sintered metals, ceramics, semi-metallics, and organic formulations all as possible options. Ceramic and semi-metallic materials provide excellent stopping power and long pad life while organic regulations provide a more cost-effective solution that may be subject to wearing faster. Wear indicators, often molded into the friction material, are designed to provide a visual warning when the pads are in need of replacing due to being worn down.
Noise levels can also vary between brake pads, with ceramic versions being quieter than conventional semi-metalic pads that can emit squealing sounds when exposed to heavy braking. These noises may be the result of fricton material that is glazed, contaminated, or unevenly worn. Brake pad wear produces brake dust, a fine powder that collects and can contain copper-based particles, prompting some manufacturers to reduce the copper content to lessen the level of dust produced. The pad material must be compatible with the type of rotors, either cast iron or steel, and if ceramic pads are used a specially coated rotor may be required to prevent premature wearing down of the components.
The friction coefficient of pad materials is strictly controlled by the manufacturer and this coefficient indicates how much braking force is generated for a given amount of applied pressure. The effects of climate can often affect braking performance so some heavy-duty pads contain additives to ensure consistent braking capability even in extreme temperatures and conditions.

Semi-metallic brake pads:
Made with a combination of metals, fibers, and binders, usually
containing copper or graphite, semi-metallic brake pads provide
strong braking power right away, even when brand new. Although,
they tend to produce more brake dust and noise compared to other
types, and may even squeal under frequent heavy use. On the upside,
they dissipate heat better, and are available at a lower cost than
ceramic brake pads. Moreover, they wear out faster, so replacing
them more often might be necessary.
Ceramic brake pads:
Consisting of a ceramic-based friction material, ceramic brake pads
perform excellent stopping power and very low wear rates. Lasting
much longer compared to semi-metallic pads, they also remain
quieter and generate minimal brake dust. Ceramics especially work
well even under heavy braking and heat, and can withstand higher
temperatures. Initial cost may be more expensive than semi-metallic
pads, but may be worth the buy since they require less frequent
replacing. Additionally, coated rotors are required for preventing
premature wear as ceramics are very abrasive. Standard rotors might
glaze quickly, and ceramics might be louder when first applied as
they need “breaking in” to mate with the rotors properly. Besides,
they are harder and more brittle, making them prone to cracking or
shattering if stuck and frozen to the rotor.
In summary, semi-metallics provide good value and performance for most drivers, while ceramics offer higher performance for more demanding driving conditions.

Semi-metallic brake pads are suitable for most passenger vehicles such as cars, SUVs, and trucks use in everyday driving conditions. They deliver a good balance of performance and value, and they work well in commercial vehicles and heavy-duty applications, such as delivery trucks that do a lot of stop-and-go-driving. Semi-metallic brake pads are also used in performance vehicles that are subjected to track driving or high-heat scenarios since copper dissipates heat effectively.
Additionally, Semi-metallic brake pads are beneficial in tow vehicles that carry heavy loads requiring strong braking. On the other hand, ceramic brake pads are ideal for high-performance sports and race cars that are subjected to repeated extreme braking. They handle heavy braking loads well and are beneficial for luxury or exotic cars in which low dust and noise is of importance. Ceramic brake pads also suit driving in very hot or cold climates since they are good at withstanding wider temperature ranges.
Ceramic brake pads are also used in expensive specialty vehicles such as motorcycles, ATVs, etc. where size or weight savings matter. Moreover, they are the preferred choice for heavy trucks, buses, and commercial fleets with regenerative braking where heat buildup occurs. Lastly, ceramics are the best choice for off-road vehicles such as Jeeps seeing rugged use on trails and rocks.
In conclusion, semi-metallion brake pads are best suited for general consumer use, while ceramics are optimal for high-performance, severe duty, or specialized applications requiring maximum durability and heat resistance.
