Out of the Top 10 regions, Guangdong, Fujian and Hunan are all in
South China. With a population of 126.01 million in Guangdong, 39
million in Fujian and 66 million in Hunan, South China is the most
important regional market for wine and spirits business.
Guangdong has retained its place as the top province with the
highest GDP in China for 32 years in a row. Guangdong’s economy led
China in many aspects in 2019:
1. The largest GDP among all provinces and municipalities,
accounting for 10.9% of the national total;
2. The largest exports value among all provinces and
municipalities, accounting for 25% of the national total;
3. The largest retail sales value of consumer goods which accounted
for about 10.5% of the national total.
Guangdong has a strong private sector. Guangdong is the largest
consumer market in China. With the rising income level and the
economic structure adjustment, the consumer expenditure pattern is
also undergoing structural change. Fujian is the first province
where people drunk much more white wine than many other provinces
and also the leading province in the imported wine and spirits
business. With Xiamen port and strong economy, Fujian is a province
with a lot of wine importers. Hunan province has a fast-growing
economy and the 2400 years old capital city Changsha is regarded as
one of the top 20 economically advanced Chinese cities. It’s the

In 1992, the New York Times reported that Hong Kong people drank
3.6 million bottles of cognac a year in the early 1990s, when the
entire population of Hong Kong was only 6 million. Before the
reform and opening up, overseas Chinese returned to their hometowns
to visit their relatives with one or two bottles of cognac XO.
Chinese consumers have the gene to drink liquor and have a natural
acceptance of spirits. Brandy has a fashionable appearance and the
connotation of liquor, and to some extent, it will become a
substitute in the migration of liquor consumption. At the same
time, brandy is an international wine, with an international
high-end image, which can meet people's needs for tasteful life.
The consumption of brandy in China is increasing year by year. In
2010, China's brandy consumption was only 75,500 tons, 102,000 tons
in 2013, 152,000 tons in 2017, 172,500 tons in 2018, and 196,700
tons in 2019. Correspondingly, China's brandy production in 2010
was only 60,000 tons, which increased to 119,000 tons in 2017,
about 139,300 tons in 2018, and 154,000 tons in 2019.
In 2017, China's imports of brandy rose by 61.8% and 34.8%
respectively compared with 2015 and 2016, respectively, and the
growth rate was the fastest among imported wines. 2017 was a record
year for Cognac, with global exports reaching the highest levels of
value and volume. The United States imported 87.4 million bottles
of cognac in 2018, ranking first; Singapore imported 27.2 million
bottles, ranking second; and China's imports reached 24.4 million
bottles, ranking third.
In the first half of 2021, China's spirits imports were US$986
million, an increase of 110.16% year-on-year, and imports were
64.1728 million liters, an increase of 45.91% year-on-year. Among
them, the import volume of brandy was 20.61 million liters, an
increase of 61.2% year-on-year, and the import value was 630
million US dollars, an increase of 133.6% year-on-year, accounting
for about 63.8% of the total import of spirits.
