German Beer in China
In 1903, German businessmen established a brewery in Tsingtao city,
calling it the Germania-Brauerei. There, brewmaster R. Schuster
crafted a German-style pilsner brewed with traditional German
techniques but using mineral water from the Laoshan spring. The
first beer was served in late December 1904. Tsingtao Beer is the
first brewery using European technologies and one of the earliest
beer producers in China. After over 100 years’ development, it
produces one of the most famous beers in China and the second
best-selling beer in the world, after SNOW.Ranking | Country | Value (in US Dollar) |

As German beer becomes more and more popular in China, Chinese
companies look to buy or license German and especially Bavarian
beer brands for exporting to China or license production within the
country.
In March 2019, Dashang Group, the largest retailer located at
Northeast China, bought the more than 400-years history
Schlossbrauerei Au-Hallertau through its German subsidiary FCAA
Castle Brewery Company.
And few months later, 1308 Brewing Technology Co, signed an
agreement with Princess Katalin von Wrede, managing director and
co-owner of Fürst Carl Schloss Brauerei Ellingen (Prince Carl Royal
Brewery Ellingen) for a license production of Fürst Carl (Prince
Carl) beer in China.
For the young drinker in China, ordering a cup of German beer in
the bar or finding a bottle Deutsche Biere in a convenience store
downstairs of their apartments, ordering some German beers online
for their next friend’s dinner, it’s quite easy and popular.
Sure, we’ve worked in the Chinese beer market for long time, and
sometimes it’s not easy. But we’re also parents, dog-walkers,
commuters, shoppers, homeowners—people who love nice beer as much
as we need it, just like you.
