What is ultrasonic transducer?

Definition: An Ultrasonic Transducer refers to Capacitive Transducer or Piezoelectric Transducer that can convert electrical energy into ultrasound energy and vice versa. It is one of the types of sound-related transducers. The frequency spectrum range of this ultrasound or ultrasonic wave is over 20KHz and this is used at 200KHz based on the application.

These are used in non-destructive testing, measuring materials, and identifying small faults because of the lower wavelength of the ultrasound. These are important in sensors for level and flow measure, distance calculation, and also in biomedical, power, and other ultrasound applications. It has a wide range of applications in various fields.

Ultrasonic Transducer Working

When this transducer transmits the electrical signals onto the target, then the signal hits the object and returns to the transducer. Here distance of the object is calculated rather than the amplitude of the signal and sound quality. These transducers utilize ultrasonic waves to calculate a few parameters but are typically used in distance measurement.

This transducer depends on the sensitivity or resolution. The ability of the transducer to disconnect signals formed by the two close reflectors is called resolution. The ability of the transducer to detect the fault in the substances is known as sensitivity. An extremely damped transducer helps to lower the reflected signal and permits the transducer to study the closely spaced faults. To transducer should have higher resolution and sensitivity with large polarized ceramic materials and crystals to change its process.

Ultrasonic transducer consists of:

The ultrasonic transducer consists of a shell, an acoustic window matching layer, a piezoelectric ceramic disc transducer, a backing, an outlet cable and a Cymbal array receiver. The piezoelectric ceramic disc transducer is made of PZT-5 piezoelectric material polarized in the thickness direction. The Cymbal array receiver consists of 8 to 16 Cymbal transducers, two metal rings and rubber gaskets. According to different designs, the main forms of ultrasonic transducers are: column type (NTK type), inverted horn type (Branson type), steel back cover type, and aluminum sheet type in the middle.

Working principle of ultrasonic transducer:

Ultrasonic sensors are sensors developed using the characteristics of ultrasonic waves. Ultrasound is a mechanical wave with a higher vibration frequency than sound waves, and ultrasonic transducers generally come in two forms: magnetostrictive and piezoelectric ceramics.

Working principle of piezoelectric ceramic ultrasonic transducer: Piezoelectric technology uses crystals with special electrical properties made of lead zirconate titanate. In a transducer, this crystalline material has two wires attached to it on opposite sides. The crystal and wiring are then assembled in a housing between two metal plates. When electricity flows through the wiring and into the crystal, the crystal rapidly changes shape and expands. When the current is terminated, the crystal returns to its original shape. Ultrasound transducers using this technology rapidly cycle an electric current through a crystal at a set frequency, creating a resonant effect.

How a magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer works: Iron-rich metals expand and contract when exposed to a magnetic field. To exploit this behavior, a core of iron-rich metal is wrapped in copper wire. The component is then contained in a can. When electricity passes through a copper wire, the metal core expands and lengthens. Like piezoelectric transducers, current at a set frequency creates a resonant effect.
