1. Descriptions:
A deck must withstand the harshest environmental conditions, so deck screws are manufactured to accommodate this application. Most high quality deck screws are made of stainless steel or another material which is resistant to corrosion. Deck screws are designed so they are easy to drive into decking planks.
Just like standard screws, deck screws also come in a wide variety of lengths and widths, which are commonly called shanks. Deck screws feature different driver shapes on the screw head. This is because no matter how easy the screw is to install it need to maintain it strength over the life of the deck. If a low quality deck screw is installed it will not provide the hold down power over the lifespan of the deck. If the deck screw loses its strength the deck boards will begin to pull away from the floor joists.

3. Applications:
Torx drive trim head deck screws with a type 17 point have a trim flat head and are used for fastening wood and composite decks to the main beams. A torx drive has become more popular as it reduces cam out during installation, and the square drive will be replaced by the torx drive. One feature of deck screws that makes them easy to install is the sharpness of their point. They often come to a very sharp, narrow point, to reduce the necessity of drilling pilot holes. Especially in a soft deck wood like cedar, these screws can be fastened without needing to pre-drill the hole, called self-tapping.
Secondly, screws designed for a deck will propel themselves into place because of their unique shank design. The thread of the screw is measured in degrees, so a shallower degree means more thread along the length. These threads spread out the force, so the screw takes less effort to put in, yet it is still difficult to pull out. Some types of deck screws are lubricated so they slide into the wood even more easily.
