Cold Rolled Steel (CRS) is well known for being an extremely ductile material, and is ideal for precision applications. Its uses are numerous, from household appliances, furniture, lockers, and filing cabinets, to garages, steel sheds and other industrial buildings.
Cold rolling of stainless steel coils allows the metal to be precision manufactured to a range of different tempers. There are three main tracks of tempering possible – quarter-, half-, and full-hard – with the corresponding level of hardness dependent on the amount of cold work done on the steel. The higher the hardness, the higher the yield point, yet the lower the material’s ductility.
This can be seen in the amount of bending allowed to each type, with quarter-hard steel capable of being bent without breaking, half-hard able to bend at a 90-degree angle, and full-hard able to be bent at a 45-degree angle without breaking.
As such, CRS is often utilised in applications where metal needs to be bent without breaking.
