Design

The turbine of a turbocharger includes a turbine and a volute, which converts engine exhaust gas into mechanical energy to drive the compressor. The pressure and temperature of the exhaust gas passing through the flow cross-sectional area of ​​the turbine decreases between the inlet and the outlet. This pressure drop is converted into kinetic energy to drive the turbine to rotate.

There are two main types of turbines: axial and radial. In an axial turbine, exhaust gas flows only in the axial direction. In a radial turbine, the gas inflow is centripetal, that is, from the outside to the inside in the radial direction, and flows out in the axial direction.

Function

When the turbine diameter is less than 160 mm, only radial turbines can be used. This corresponds to a turbocharger engine with a power of approximately 1000 kilowatts. When it exceeds 300 mm, only axial turbines can be used. Between these two values, both axial and radial directions are acceptable.

Since the radial turbine is the most widely used, the following description is limited to the design and function of this turbine. In this radial or centripetal turbine, the exhaust gas pressure is converted into kinetic energy and is directed to the turbine at a constant speed around the turbine. The kinetic energy is converted into the energy of the drive shaft through the turbine. This design enables almost all the kinetic energy to be transferred when the exhaust gas reaches the outlet.
