The smoking process turns the base colour into a rich dark colour sometimes flashes of light streaks appear in the heartwood to give a natural look compared to just dying veneer.

Nowadays woods such as Oak, Acacia, Eucalyptus, Yellow Poplar, Red Gum, Knotty Pine or larch are smoked or fumed by treating them with ammonia (NH₃). This changes the surface color after a short time and modifies the coloring throughout the entire workpiece after a longer period. The color is then, in contrast to other untreated or dyed woods, almost totally resistant to ageing and the effects of light. In addition, the physical properties of the wood are improved: it becomes more elastic, less brittle and easier to work and process.
