Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Wastewater treatment technology uses a membrane or a ‘perm-selective’ membrane such as a microfiltration or ultrafiltration. The membrane is porous and allows the passage of water and dissolved solids while restricting the passage of solid materials on the other side of the membrane.

 

MBR Membrane Bioreactor MBR is a new type of high efficiency wastewater treatment process combining high efficiency membrane separation technology with traditional fully activated sludge method, which replaces the secondary sedimentation tank in the traditional activated sludge method with membrane modules to retain a large number of microbial flora in the biological system, which leads to an increase in the number of microbial flora and biological species in the system and improves the wastewater treatment capacity and efficiency. The effluent quality and volumetric load of the system are greatly improved, and the effluent can be reused as medium water.

 

 

How Does Membrane Bioreactor Work?

 

Membrane bioreactor wastewater treatment combines the conventional biological process, i.e., activated sludge, with the membrane filtration technology, Just like the sewage treatment plant, the traditional classical treatment process is Pretreatment ( Bar Screen)—Primary Sedimentation—Anaerobic treatment—-Aerobic tank—-Secondary Sedimentation tank, and in this treatment process “ Sedimentation tank “ should be very big and the output water quality not stable because of some Activated sludge will be outflowed together with permeate. Advantages of Wastewater Treatment System

 

The MBR process has a number of significant advantages over the conventional activated sludge method, such as:

In the MBR process, the activated sludge concentration is generally controlled at 7000 to 18000 mg/L. This is equivalent to five times the sludge concentration of the conventional sludge system. As a result, the biochemical treatment efficiency of the MBR process is greatly improved and the floor space of the reaction tank can be saved by 60%. In addition, since the membrane modules replace the deep treatment processes such as clarification and filtration, these equipment can be eliminated, thus saving the floor space of the entire wastewater treatment plant.

  

Generally speaking, wastewater treated by MBR process has almost no detectable suspended matter and turbidity less than 1. Combining biochemical treatment with membrane separation technology, MBR produced water can be used for almost all non-potable reuse applications - agricultural green irrigation, boiler make-up water (RO pretreatment) and industrial process water. The MBR process is also effective in reducing the presence of pathogenic bacteria, such as E. coli and Cryptosporidium spp.

  

By removing treatment units such as primary sedimentation tanks and clarifiers, MBR is integrated into an integrated process for operation. No sludge settling or chemical dosing (e.g., flocculants and coagulants) is required, thus also eliminating the chemical dosing system required in the conventional case. In addition, by eliminating the sludge settling tank, which is greatly affected by sludge concentration and properties, the number of sampling and analysis tests can be taken.
