According to Wikipedia, 4-Androstenedione is a 19-carbon steroid
hormone produced in the adrenal glands and the gonads as an
intermediate step in the biochemical pathway that produces the
androgen testosterone and the oestrogens oestrone and oestradiol.
4-Androstenedione originates either from the conversion of
dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) or from 17- hydroxyprogesterone.
Conversion of dehydroepiandrosterone to androstenedione requires
3-ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. 17- hydroxyprogesterone, on the
other hand, requires 17, 20 lyase for its synthesis. Thus, both
reactions that produce androstenedione directly or indirectly
depend on 17, 20 lyase. 4-Androstenedione is further converted to
either testosterone or oestrogen. Conversion of 4-androstenedione
to testosterone requires the enzyme 17ßhydroxysteroid
dehydrogenase, while conversion of androstenedione to oestrogen
(e.g. oestrone and oestradiol) requires the enzyme aromatase. The
production of adrenal androstenedione is governed by
ACTH(Adrenocorticotropic Hormone), whereas production of gonadal
androstenedione is under control by gonadotropins. In premenopausal
women, the adrenal glands and ovaries each produce about half of
the total androstendione .
Anabolic steroids are commonly utilized to treat people who have a
hormone deficiency or who have muscle wasting due to cancer or HIV.
They have also been utilized as performance enhancing drugs to
increase muscle strength and size for competitive sports.
Supplements containing androstenedione were introduced in the mid
1990’s and were promoted as a natural way to help increase strength

Androstenedione gained popularity as the supplement used by the
baseball homerun hitter Mark McGwire and other professional sports
players. In January 2005 legislation went into effect in the United
States called the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004. This
reclassifies androstenedione from a dietary supplement to an
anabolic steroid, which is a schedule III controlled substance.
It is used by the body to make testosterone and estrogen.
The dosage and effect of Androstenedione :
4-Androstenedione has been shown to increase serum testosterone
levels over an eight-hour period in men when taken as a single oral
dose of 300 mg per day, but a dose of 100 mg had no significant
effect on serum testosterone. However, serum levels of estradiol
increased following both the 100 mg and 300 mg doses.
The study also reported that the serum level of estrogens and
testosterone produced varied widely between individuals.Because
androstenedione can be converted to estrogenic steroids, people
taking this supplement may have estrogenic side-effects.In child
development, higher levels of androstenedione in boys have been
associated with higher levels of acting out behaviors.
