What is Thermosetting powder coating:

1. Thermosetting powder coating refers to a thermosetting resin as a film-forming substance, and a curing agent which is subjected to a crosslinking reaction is heated to form an insoluble and infusible hard coating. The temperature is higher and the coating does not soften like a thermoplastic coating, but only decomposes. Since the resin used in the thermosetting powder coating is a prepolymer having a low degree of polymerization, the molecular weight is low, the leveling property of the coating is good, the decoration is good, and the low molecular weight prepolymer is cured. It can form a network cross-linked macromolecule, and thus the coating has better corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Therefore, the development of thermosetting powder coatings is particularly rapid.

 

1.1 Epoxy powder coating. It is the first application in thermosetting powder coatings due to its excellent adhesion to metals, corrosion resistance, hardness, flexibility and impact strength. Epoxy powder coatings are formulated from Epoxy Resin, curing agents, pigments, fillers, and other assistant . 1.2 Polyester powder coating. Polyester powder coatings have unique properties compared to other types of powder coatings. It is better in weather resistance and UV resistance than epoxy resin. 1.3 Acrylate powder coating. Acrylic resin powder coatings are both thermoplastic and thermoset. Application of Thermosetting Powder Coat :

  1. First the part must be prepared. It must be thoroughly cleaned so that the powder coating will stick smoothly to it.There are both mechanical and chemical ways to prepare the part.   2. Second, the powder is actually applied to the part. Powder is applied to most metal objects by spraying it on with an electrostatic gun. The gun gives the powder a negative electric charge, and the object is grounded. In other cases, the powder is sprayed using compressed air. There are many different nozzles that can be used, depending on the type, shape, and size of the object that is being coated in powder.
  3. And finally, it is cured by being baked in an oven. The curing process in powder coating is known as crosslinking, and depending on the type of coating that is being used, it requires a specific temperature and a specific amount of time in the heat in order to reach full cure and create the properties it was designed to offer. Most powders cure around 390 degrees Fahrenheit on a 10-minute timer, however that schedule could change according to the needs and requirements of the manufacturer.
