What is a GPS navigation antenna?

A GPS antenna is a radio frequency antenna that provides connectivity with the Global Positioning System, a proprietary, satellite-based radio navigation system designed, created, and owned by the United States Government. When appropriately connected to a GPS transceiver, the GPS antenna is able to transmit and receive the specific radio frequency signals needed for a GPS device to perform its time, location, and navigation functions. In performing this function GPS antennas become the key point of interaction between the satellites which form the GPS Space Segment and the GPS User segment (receivers). The output of the GNSS or GPS antenna is fed into a GNSS or GPS receiver that can compute the position.

Passive vs. Active GPS Antennas

There are two types of GPS antennas: passive and active. Passive antennas idly receive GPS signals and pass those signals to a GPS navigation device. Active units include a powered amplifier that allows the antenna to pull signals from larger distances. Amplified antennas nearly double the signal reception range of a GPS device.

Active antennas are typically more expensive and more challenging to install than passive antennas. Still, these antennas can be installed farther away from a GPS tracker. For this reason, these are better suited for large vehicles or situations where a signal must be maintained.
