DIP switches are widely used in industry-standard architecture (ISA) computer expansion cards to select interrupt requests (IRQs) and memory addresses. Before the advent of cheaper battery-powered RAM, 1980s arcade machines also used DIP switches to set game parameters, such as difficulty, or the number of coins to be inserted each time. DIP switches were also commonly used in garage door openers or some early cordless phones to set security codes. Security codes can be set with up to twelve switches and can be used to avoid electromagnetic interference with other garage door openers or other devices. Current garage door openers have switched to higher security rolling codes.
