The MSOFTX3000 serves as the mobile switching center (MSC) server at the control layer of the CS domain in the Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA)/WCDMA core network. It implements functions, such as call control and connection management for voice and data services based on IP or TDM.
By supporting protocols and functions of both the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and the TD-SCDMA/WCDMA, the MSOFTX3000 facilitates smooth evolution from the GSM to the TD-SCDMA/WCDMA. With the bearer separated from the control, the MSOFTX3000 can function as the core of a network along with different bearer networks such as IP and TDM. During the upgrade of the core network (CN) of the mobile network (GSM -> 3GPP R99 -> 3GPP R4 -> 3GPP R5->...-> 3GPP R10), the MSOFTX3000 can function as the following network elements (NEs):
Visited mobile switching center (VMSC) server/visitor location register (VLR)
Gateway mobile switching center (GMSC) server
Tandem mobile switching center (TMSC) server
MSC/service switching point (SSP)
Media gateway control function (MGCF)
Interconnection border control function (IBCF)
