 Magnesium zirconium brick is a kind of magnesia composite refractory made of magnesia and zirconium as the main raw materials. The main chemical components are MgO, ZrO2 and SiO2.The main mineral composition is calcite, magnesium olivine and plagic zircon
During sintering, zirconite in the matrix reacts with coarse magnesium oxide particles to form magnesium olivine and plagioclase zircon (ZrO2) surrounding the magnesium oxide particles, protecting the magnesium oxide particles from erosion.Due to the difference of thermal expansion between zrO2 and zrO2, fine cracks are formed inside the brick, which can disperse the stress.Therefore, magnesia-zirconium brick has good thermal shock stability and good corrosion resistance to metal oxides and sulfides.
Magnesium zirconium brick is mainly used in the upper and middle part of the regenerative chamber of glass kiln, and its service life is much higher than that of burnt magnesia brick, and its service life can reach more than 6 years in the kiln producing sodium-calcium glass.

Most of the domestic glass kilns use three-layer magnesia-zirconium latticed bricks in the upper part of the regenerative chamber. The bricks are fired in ultra-high temperature tunnel kilns, which is a new type of superior magnesia-zirconite refractory material combined with calcite, magnesium olivine and zirconite.Magnesium zirconia brick before use has produced a large amount of stable magnesium olivine and zirconia, and closely surrounded by magnesite, because of the strong corrosion resistance of magnesium olivine and zirconia, thus improving the corrosion resistance of brick.The maximum temperature of the upper part of the regenerator is around 1300℃, and the magnesium-zirconium brick is fully able to resist the impact of high temperature at this temperature.As regenerative chamber air exchange, the amount of silicon in molten pool glass flying material, sodium, calcium, and a large amount of sulfur in gas and a small amount of phosphorus attached on the surface of brick, gradually into the interior of the brick, and forms of sodium, calcium, magnesium sulfate, phosphate and silicate and their compound salt, dismembered brick bonding strength at the same time, which results in the decrease of the strength of the brick.

1, silica erosion

Magnesium zirconium brick are erosion between periclase and zircon, with the increase of SiO2 content, make CaO/SiO2 ratio change, to generate a new low melting point of silicate phase, such as: diopside rhodonite (CMS2), magnesium (C3MS2), calcium magnesium olivine (CMS), such as the formation of the silicate phase led to a larger volume effect, make magnesium zirconium brick cracking and spalling.

2, sulfur and alkali steam erosion

Using water gas fuel combustion to produce a large number of harmful oxide gases, such as sulfur and phosphorus in the production of glass products at the same time also to join a certain amount of alkali flux, these substances in the process of regenerative chamber air exchange, attached on the surface of magnesium zirconium brick, brick and internal penetration, in brick porosity and periclase cleavage surface deposition, and reaction generated new salts material, magnesium sulfate (see figure 1, figure 2), anhydrous sodium sulfate (Na2SO4).The structure of brick is changed, and the microstructure of brick is destroyed, thus reducing the service life of brick.
