Common Hypoid Gear Helical Bevel Pinion Gear With 90 Degree Right Angle Bias

Hypoid gears are a type of spiral bevel gears that have an offset shaft and non-intersecting axes. They are commonly used in various applications where high torque transmission and compact design are required.

 

  • In the terms of reduction ratio: Common hypoid gears generally have moderate reduction ratios, typically ranging from 3:1 to 10:1. These gears are designed to provide a moderate decrease in speed and a corresponding increase in torque.
  • In the terms of application focus: Common hypoid gears are commonly used in various applications where a moderate reduction in speed and an increase in torque are required. They are found in automotive differentials, power tools, and other machinery that require a balance between speed and torque.

 

 

 

Hypoid gears are a special case of spiral bevel gears. The special feature is that the axes of the two wheels are perpendicular but do not intersect, and there is a certain offset distance, which is technically called offset.

 

The hypoid gear counter axis has an offset distance, which makes the transmission design arrangement more flexible and also improves the strength of the small wheel. The small wheel of the hypoid gear pair has a larger helix angle, which enables a greater degree of coincidence when meshing, and the transmission is smoother. During the transmission process, there is relative sliding along the tooth length direction and tooth height direction, which makes the workpiece grinding process better after heat treatment. However, since the relative sliding force is larger than that of bevel gears, the possibility of early wear is also greater, so attention should be paid to the selection of lubricating oil.

 

Among the curved tooth lines, arcs and long epicycloids are the most widely used, and arcs are mostly used. Curved teeth are easy to grind, can achieve high precision, and can be used for high-speed transmission. The long epicycloidal teeth are contoured teeth and are cut continuously without intermittent tooth division.

 

The difference between this gear and a spiral bevel gear is that the pinion shaft of this gear deviates from the axis of the gear shaft to a certain extent. For gear meshing, in addition to spiral bevel rolling, tooth line direction sliding is also used. Therefore, compared with spiral bevel gears, this gear can drive more quietly and smoothly.

 

 

 

Characteristics of hypoid gears:

Transmission advantages of hypoid gears:

 

  1.  The axis of the small wheel is offset, which increases the helix angle of the small wheel, resulting in a significant increase in the diameter of the small wheel, thus enhancing the strength and rigidity of the small wheel; and achieving a larger transmission ratio than spiral bevel gears under the same conditions.
  2. There is relative sliding along the tooth length direction and tooth height direction, so the tooth surface wears evenly. Heat treatment also facilitates grinding, improves contact areas, improves tooth surface finish and reduces noise.
  3. The axis offset allows greater freedom in the arrangement of the transmission in space.
  4. The axis is offset and can be crossed, and both wheels can be supported by stable straddles.
  5. The small wheel helix angle is increased, the strength is significantly improved, and it can adapt to a larger transmission ratio. Single-stage transmission can take more than 10.
  6. Good lubrication conditions and high transmission efficiency.

 

 

Disadvantages compared to other types of staggered shaft drives:

 

  1. The calculation and design are far more complicated than other gear pairs.
  2. Compared with general orthogonal spiral spur gears, the calculation of tooth adjustment is more complicated, and the matching of the contact area is also difficult.
  3. The lubrication conditions are high and special hypoid gear lubricants are required.
