High ratio hypoid gear refers to a hypoid gear system that provides a significant reduction in speed or increase in torque. The term "high ratio" indicates that the gear system achieves a large reduction ratio between the input and output parameters.

High reduction ratio hypoid, also known as helical worm drive, is an alternative to traditional worm gear drives.

 

Compared with worm gear transmission, high reduction ratio hypoid drive has many advantages:

 

Both the large wheel and small wheel can be made of steel, which greatly reduces material costs; running-in wear, continuous operation wear, and the subsequent increase in backlash problems can be eliminated. Using high reduction ratio hypoid gears in the workshop can also improve production efficiency. Like bevel gear production, high reduction ratio hypoid gears can also be produced completely in a closed-loop system. The closed-loop system ensures high-precision production comparable to bevel gears.

 

 

 

Characteristics of hypoid gears:

  • The transmission is more stable and the noise is low

Transmission advantages of hypoid gears:

 

  • The axis of the small wheel is offset, which increases the helix angle of the small wheel, resulting in a significant increase in the diameter of the small wheel, thus enhancing the strength and rigidity of the small wheel; and achieving a larger transmission ratio than spiral bevel gears under the same conditions.
  • There is relative sliding along the tooth length direction and tooth height direction, so the tooth surface wears evenly. Heat treatment also facilitates grinding, improves contact areas, improves tooth surface finish and reduces noise.
  • The axis offset allows greater freedom in the arrangement of the transmission in space.
  • The axis is offset and can be crossed, and both wheels can be supported by stable straddles.
  • The small wheel helix angle is increased, the strength is significantly improved, and it can adapt to a larger transmission ratio. Single-stage transmission can take more than 10.

Disadvantages compared to other types of staggered shaft drives:
