What is percutaneous laser discus decompression (PLDD)?

Percutaneous laser disc decompression (PLDD) is a minimally invasive therapy used to treat certain herniated discs. In this case, minimally invasive means that the procedure is characterized by a simple puncture and takes place under local anesthesia, which means the patient - in contrast to an 'open' back surgery - avoids a general anesthesia. Hospitalization and rehabilitation time decrease significantly. The PLDD is a particularly low-risk method, since the spinal canal does not have to be opened and the surrounding tissue is not damaged or removed. The decompression of the disc by laser is a decades-long (first time 1987) proven method that has been constantly evolving.

What is this procedure about? The aim of this treatment is the shrinkage of the protrusion of the disc and relief of the neural structures. Even if only a small proportion of the bulging disc parts are reduced by the laser, pain and neurological deficits will be alleviated or eliminated thanks to the volume reduction.

 

 

The PLDD treatment is performed on an outpatient basis using only local anesthesia. During the procedure, a thin needle is inserted into the herniated disc under x-ray or CT guidance. An optical fiber is inserted through the needle and laser energy is sent through the fiber, vaporizing a tiny portion of the disc nucleus. This creates a partial vacuum which draws the herniation away from the nerve root, thereby relieving the pain. The effect usually is immediate.

The higher power (watts) level laser models provide faster treatment times and delivery of optimal energy dosages, an enhanced ability to treat difficult conditions, and enhanced clinical outcomes.

 

Interactive User Interface

Treatments can be administered and managed with three options: 1) Manual Protocols using the power level, operating mode and timer selections; 2) Preset Protocols that utilize a built-in database of protocols that are organized by anatomy and condition; 3) Custom Protocols that allows the user to create their own unique protocols.

 

Choice Of Different Operating Modes

Two operating modes Continuous Wave (CW) or Pulsed Modes (50khzFrequencies) are built into the diode laser equipment. The specific power level (watts) can be adjusted through progress bar on the color touchscreen. The Pulsewidth can be operated using different units, like you can set duration 50us, interval 1ms.
