Chemically, sapphire is single crystal aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and is useful in a transmission range from 0.2 - 5.5µm

Sapphire is grown using a variety of methods. Standard grade Sapphire material is grown by Verneuil and Czochralski methods, whereas higher quality Sapphire is manufactured by the Kyropulus growth method.
