Carbon fiber is a popular material as it has a high strength to weight ratio, a high tensile strength, is resistant to corrosion and very durable.

The best way to cut carbon fiber rod or tube is with a high speed abrasive cutoff wheel, or even against the edge of your belt grinder platen; not with a saw. Due to the nature of this material, it may splinter if you try to cut it with a saw, especially a hand saw, so care must be taken when cutting. Also, taping around the location of the cut will help prevent splintering.

WARNING: These tubes are unidirectional carbon fiber, not woven. They have very high stiffness but low crushing strength so great care must be taken when holding the part while cutting, and it is not recommended to clamp them.

Carbon fiber and composites

Carbon fiber: the raw material

It is produced through the pyrolysis of polymeric fibers (PAN) in a large oven within a controlled setting. That is where polymeric fibers made of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), known as the precursor, are simultaneously stretched and heated up to about 2000°, with an inert gas atmosphere to form carbon fibers through graphitization.
