Product Description:

Brake pads are a friction material mounted on a backing plate that slows or stops the rotation of the wheel. There are two main types: disc brake pads, which press against the face of a rotor or disc, and drum brake pads, which press against the inside surface of a brake drum.

The friction material used for brake pads is composed of various friction modifiers such as sintered metal, fiber, rubber, ceramics, or other composites. This material creates enough friction to cause braking, but won't damage the metal surface. Semi-metallic and ceramic materials are commonly used.

The backing plate is usually made of steel and provides structure for the pad while also securing it to the caliper bracket. It also has guide pins and clips for alignment with the bracket.

The amount of braking torque is determined by the brake pads gripping the rotor or drum with a brake caliper bracket. Pistons or a mechanism within the caliper presses the pads against the rotor while in motion, but with regular use these pads gradually wear down to a minimum safe thickness (usually around 5 mm). If the pads are too thin, they won't be able to provide enough torque.

For each wheel, the pads are replaced as a set since the amount of wear can differ. It's a common repair job and essential for the car's functioning.
