Backing bearings are typically cylindrical roller bearings, with extra thick outer rings and handled in batches per shaft. Backing bearings are preferably handled as complete sets.
In additional to the general remanufacturing process the set of
backing bearings total radial cross section (wall thickness) is
machined to achieve a very tight cross section variation of all
bearings within the batch/shaft. The backing bearing
remanufacturing process has been adapted from the general bearing
remanufacturing process:
regrind of the outer ring outside surface and refresh the
logarithmic profile
assemble, inspect and reclassify section height groups.
Bearing features
High load carrying capacity
Low friction
The optimized internal geometry reduces friction and heat generated
by the bearing.
Long service life
The logarithmic roller profile reduces edge stresses at the
roller/raceway contact under all load conditions. Also, the
logarithmic outer ring outside diameter profile reduces edge
loading during operation and contributes to extended service life.
Enhanced operational reliability
The surface finish on the contact surfaces of the rollers and
raceways supports the formation of a hydrodynamic lubricant film.
Effective lubrication
Most backing bearings have lubrication holes and many have
one or more annular grooves in the inner ring to enable lubrication
via the support shaft.
