Serum amyloid A (SAA) is an acute phase reactive protein secreted by the liver. When virus or bacterial infection occurs, SAA will increase significantly within 3 ~ 6 hours, even hundreds of times in the acute phase. The half-life of SAA is very short and will decay rapidly during rehabilitation. It is more sensitive than CRP. The combination of the two can better distinguish the types of infection and improve the diagnostic efficiency of viral infection.
