The needle bed process
This method consists of spring-loaded probes connected to each
check point on the circuit board.Springs apply a pressure of 100 to
200g to each probe to ensure good contact at each test point. This
array of probes is called a "needle bed".Under the control of
testing software, testing points and testing signals can be
programmed. Figure 14-3 is a typical needle-bed tester structure,

Flying probe test
The flying pin tester does not depend on the pin pattern mounted on

Test speed is an important criterion for selecting tester.Pin-bed
testers can accurately test thousands of test sites at a time,
whereas flying needle testers can only test two or four test sites
at a time.Depending on the complexity of the board, a needle-bed
tester may cost as little as 20-305 for a single test, whereas a
flying needle tester may require IH or more to complete the same
evaluation.Shipley (1991) explains that even though manufacturers
of high volume printed circuit boards consider mobile flypin
testing techniques slow, this method is a good option for
manufacturers of lower volume complex circuit boards.
For bare-board testing, there are special test instruments
(Lea,1990).A more cost-effective approach is to use a
general-purpose instrument. Although this type of instrument is
initially more expensive than a dedicated instrument, its initial
high cost will be offset by a reduction in the cost of the
individual configuration.For general purpose grids, the standard
grid for boards with pin components and surface mount devices is
2.5mm.The test pad should be greater than or equal to 1.3mm.For IMM
grids, test pads are designed to be larger than 0.7mm.If the grid
is small, the test pin is small, brittle, and prone to
damage.Therefore, a grid larger than 2.5mm is preferred.Crum
(1994b) states that the combination of a universal tester (a
standard grid tester) and a flying needle tester enables accurate
and economical testing of high-density circuit boards.Another
approach he suggests is to use a conductive rubber tester, a
technique that can be used to detect points that deviate from the
grid.However, different heights of hot air leveling pads will
hinder the connection of the test points.
