Stone Paper is type of paper that is made from crushed stone. It’s idea is about sustainable development with respect to our planet. Stone paper is a completely non-toxic, biodegradable alternative to paper. It is suited for many types of printing including offset lithography and screenprint. True to the name, Stone paper consists mostly of calcium carbonate, a substance found in rocks and is completely tree-free. The paper will degrade safely, without the exhaustion of harmful gasses, and be completely gone in 9 to 12 months if left in nature. It can also be easily burned without the release of harmful gasses.

No trees, water, toxins or bleach are used in the production of Stone paper. Unused or excess Stone paper can be easily recycled into new Stone paper. Because it is tree free, and as a result fibre-free, it doesn’t absorb ink like traditional wood pulp paper and therefore uses 15 to 20% less ink during print in comparison to wood pulp paper. This results in an extremely sharp and crisp image.

Stone paper has many advantages over plastic and conventional paper:

Wood-free – it is produced from limestone powder. Trees and plants, important sources of oxygen, are left standing.

Conserves resources I – the raw material used is a waste product from quarries. It does not require additional mining.

Conserves resources II – its production (a thermal process is used to fuse the stone powder with polyethylene resin, after which it is processed into webs) consumes much less energy and water than conventional paper.

Stable and tear-resistant – stone paper is much more resilient than paper made from wood fibres. And it is both water and fire-resistant. In consistency and possible uses, it is reminiscent of thin plastic.

Environmentally friendly – stone paper does not require chemical bleaches or acids to be whitened. It is naturally white.

Versatile – its smooth surface renders it suitable for offset, UV offset and digital printing.

In short, stone paper is an environmentally friendly, state-of-the-art alternative to both paper and conventional plastic. And thus, perfectly suited when a stable and resistant printing substrate is required.

Stone paper has some attractive characteristics as a writing material. At first touch, you can tell the sheets aren’t normal wood-based paper. The pages are smoother, and you have to make an effort to tear them. Ink writes just as well, or perhaps even better, although some gel inks may take a minute or two to dry completely. In many ways stone papers like Repap seem to reinvigorate paper with aspects you always wished paper had. It’s durable, oil and tear resistant, and waterproof, and since you can fold it like paper your airplane-making days may not be as numbered as you thought before.
